What is the Difference Between NDA and CDS?

Many defence aspirants often get confused between National Defence Academy Examination (NDA) and Combined Defence Services Examination (CDS). Both exams are conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and provide an opportunity to join the Indian Armed Forces, but they differ in eligibility, age, education level, and career stage.

Educational Qualification

NDA

  • For students who have passed or are appearing in 12th class

  • For Air Force & Navy: 12th with Physics & Mathematics

  • Entry at an early stage (after school)

CDS

  • For candidates who have completed Graduation

  • Any stream for IMA & OTA

  • Engineering required for Navy

  • Graduation with specific subjects for Air Force

Main Difference:

NDA is after 12th, CDS is after Graduation.

Age Limit

NDA

  • 16.5 to 19.5 years

CDS

  • 19 to 25 years (varies slightly by academy)

Main Difference:
NDA candidates are younger; CDS candidates are graduates.


Training Academy

NDA

Selected candidates first train at:

National Defence Academy (Pune)

After 3 years, they move to respective academies:

  • IMA (Army)

  • INA (Navy)

  • AFA (Air Force)

CDS

Candidates directly join respective academies:

  • Indian Military Academy (IMA)

  • Officers Training Academy (OTA)

  • INA

  • AFA

Main Difference:

NDA includes 3 years of joint training before specialization.
CDS candidates go directly to their service academy.
