Career Paths to Join the Indian Air Force

There are three main branches in which you can join the IAF as an officer:

1. Flying Branch

  • Role: Fighter pilot, transport pilot, helicopter pilot.

  • Entry: NDA, AFCAT, CDS, NCC Special Entry.

2. Technical Branch

  • Role: Aircraft engineering, maintenance, and systems support.

  • Entry: AFCAT (via EKT), University Entry Scheme (UES), and other technical entries.

How to Become an Air Force Officer After 12th

1. National Defence Academy (NDA) Entry

  • Eligibility: Only male candidates who have completed 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics.

  • Exam Conducted By: UPSC (Union Public Service Commission).

  • Training: 3 years at NDA, Pune + 1 year at Air Force Academy, Hyderabad.

  • Age Limit: 16.5 to 19.5 years.

How to Become an Air Force Officer After Graduation

AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test)

  • For both male and female graduates.

  • Held twice a year.

  • Age limit varies by branch (typically 20 to 26 years).

  • Requires a graduation degree (for Flying Branch, 60% marks in graduation with Physics & Maths at 10+2 level).

    CDS (Combined Defence Services) Exam

    • Conducted by UPSC.

    • Male candidates can apply for Air Force Academy through CDS.

    • Requires Physics & Mathematics in 10+2 and a graduation degree.

      NCC Special Entry

      • For candidates with a C certificate in NCC Air Wing with minimum ‘B’ grade.

      • No written exam. Entry through SSB interview.

Key Skills Required
  • Strong academic background in science (especially Physics and Math).

  • Physical fitness and mental stamina.

  • Leadership and communication skills.

  • Passion for aviation and national service.

Physical and Medical Standards
  • Height: Minimum 152 cm (varies for female and male candidates).
